The most effective fishing machine available today is the the One Boat Network. It is a result of Minn Kota and Humminbird joining forces to create effective communication between their products to support more successful fishing. All the products of the OBN have the latest technology and communicate effectively. The OBN will literally set you up for success on any fishing trip. You will be able to do more casting and concentrating on catching fish while technology assists you to move and position your boat, then help you find and locate fish for you to catch. You can see a schematic of the network below.
Let's go through the parts of the OBN and see how it will greatly contribute to your fishing success. Starting at the bow or front of your boat, your power for the network is the trolling motor. The bow is the assumed location of the motor. It could also be mounted at the stern or back of the boat. It obviously has the main task of pushing or pulling your boat, depending on it's mounting location. It does this task silently so that the fish are not disturbed when your
boat is moving close to them. It can get your boat through the toughest weeds and grass to get close to the fish. The technology of the motor allows you to set the direction of your boat and move at a pace that you set. The motor will continue in that direction and at the same speed until you change it. You have a remote that you can clip to your belt or your jacket. This lets you easily control the operation of the trolling motor. Since the motor is controlled by a remote you can make changes to its operation from anywhere in the boat. Control of the trolling motor can be done with a foot pedal. Sometimes it is easier to control with your foot rather than having to use your hand to send commends to the motor. Trolling motors that can be included in the OBN include freshwater models of Ultrex, Ulterra, and Terrova. Saltwater motors that can also be the heart of the network are the Riptide Ulterra and the Riptide Terrova.
All of these motors must have the state-of-the-art GPS trolling system called i-Pilot Link to do the communicating. Along with talking with the other parts of OBN, i-Pilot Link makes accurate Spot Lock available so you can mark waypoints that you want to return to for more fishing later. The waypoint is a geographical mark at a place on the lake that is defined by latitude and longitude. This is a capability that comes from the use of the GPS system. When you instruct the system to mark a waypoint the latitude and longitude of that location are saved into the memory of the i-Pilot Link with the name you assign it. Later when you want i-Pilot Link to return to that location you just tell it the name of the location and it uses the latitude and longitude to go back there. i-Pilot Link also records your path through the water and can take you back down that same recorded path if you wish to do so, all while controlling your speed and steering. Pretty nifty!
The Humminbird fish finder is another integral part of the OBN as well. The fish finding units that are compatible with this system are the second generation HELIX G2N or later models and all the SOLIX fish finder models. These fish finders are loaded with technology as well. They are able to communicate with the trolling motors listed above, but also they have Bluetooth compatibility so you can setup your smartphone to control them. Latest technology included is the MEGA Down or MEGA Side Imaging ability. The fish finder will display in very high resolution what is viewed by the transducer located in the bottom of the trolling motor. If the motor has MEGA Side Imaging you can see under water out to a distant of 125 feet from your boat, all the snags, timber, stumps, grass beds, and most importantly the fish! If it is a MEGA Down Imaging transducer in your trolling motor, you can see straight down under the boat the same types of objects. Talk about setting up your targets! All you have to do is cast to catch them. These fish finders even have touchscreen ability!
These fish finder models have the ability of recording the lake underwater topography. Using the menus on the fish finder you can record vegetation, bottom hardness, and contour depths for future reference. The recorded map can be saved to the memory of your fish finder or to a Zeroline SD card. So you make your own map of the lake that you fish all the time and can open it at any time that you are fishing there.
When you get to a spot that you want to stop and fish for a while you can use the i-Pilot Link remote to control the Talon shallow water anchors to keep your boat stationed at that location. The anchors also can be controlled from a foot pedal that makes life much easier. If you setup your smartphone to do it you can control the raising and lowering of anchors through the Bluetooth connection.
You realize that you do not have to buy all the fishing abilities described in this post to be able to use them. You can buy any of these products by itself and increase your fishing fun!
I know if you had a rig that included all the stuff described here you would go fishing more often. You might even take some people with you. Have fun fishing!
